Writing ink: Rohrer & Klingner, Solferino

I like to write using a reservoir pen and i recently purchased a new ink that I have not tried before. This is the famour Rohrer & Klingner ink with the colour ”Solferino”. It is a beautiful deep purple hue and has a great lustre. The ink is not very expensive, water soluble and it is one of the most easy flowing inks that I have tried.

It works well in pens with a fine tip, because of the easy flowing characteristics I believe that you should probably not use it with tips larger than Medium size since it spreads itself really well.

I bought mine from ”pennshopen” an online web store specialising in writing instruments here in Sweden. Price is 55 SEK and you can find it here.

The Borscht Files

Many people do not know the power of a good beetroot soup. I am here to tell you that this is a wonderful soup that will keep for a while and you can freeze it and when it is thawed out it will taste even better. It should preferably be cooked a day ahead since the full flavour does not come out immediately.

2 l water (start with half the amount, add as necessary when you go)
2 pcs large potatoes
2 pcs bay leaves
3 pcs allspice berries
1 dl red lentils
1 pcs stock cube (veg.)
3 tbs oil
1 pcs onion
1 pcs carrot
4 pcs beetroots
1 tbs dill seeds
1/2 pcs red bell pepper
1/2 pcs squash
100 g cabbage
2 cloves garlic
1 tbs tomato purée
Salt
Black pepper
Sour cream for serving

Rinse lentils in cold water until water is clear.

Boil about 1 l of water in a large pot. Peal and chop the poatoes in quarters roughly. Put potatoes, bay leaves and allspice into the boiling water together with the stock cube.

Shred onions, peal the carrots and the beetroots and then shred all of it coarsely. Heat oil in a pan, fry the onions, carrot and beetrot shred for a few minutes. Add some water and the dill seeds and let simmer for 15 minutes.

Dice the bell pepper and the squash. Shred the cabbage. Put bell pepper, squash aqnd cabbage in the large pot. Put the hot beetroot mix from the pan in the pot and let simmer for about 30 min.

Crush the garlic cloves and add them, let simmer for another 10 min or so.

Taste. Use salt and black pepper to your liking but do NOT make it too salty.

Turn the plate off, cover the pot and let it rest for a couple of hours. Then put it in a cool place for eating tomorrow or re-heat it to eat now. Eat with sour cream in the bowl and a good rustic bread.

This recipe also works with meat if you like that. Add some water and about 1 lb of beef if you like. The beef should be diced and fried before added and should be added at the same time as the potatoes goes in.

Notebook
Notebook

I love notebooks. This particular one is made from the same type of binders and print as the official law book in Sweden is. It may not look as nice as my other thai notebooks or the paperblanks ones but I really like the feel of this. Very Swedish in design.

Todays work brought me to Hässelby Strand. I was going to the electrical plant here to check out some fibre route for the new radio system we are constructing. The plant is a sensitive place and therefore not allowed to photograph.
Hässelby grew in the 1950s and the metro station was opened in 1958 when most of the houses from this period had already been built.

I have tried to balance the flash here in two fashions. One is to balance the amount of light so that the candle flame is still seen clearly. The other is that normally a flash has a day light temperature but that would look really blue here.

So I have used a CTO filter (full CTO) to change the flash temperature to around 3200 K instead of the usual 5600 K. This means that the colour temperature of the flash light is about the same as the color temperature on the light coming from the flame.

Bracelet and Rings
Bracelet and Rings

My wife is a silver smith. She made these rings, which is my engagement and my wedding ring. The runes on the rings complete each other into full old norse runes, spelling our names. The bracelet is a birthday present from last year.

Nordenflychtsvägen
Nordenflychtsvägen

This is one of the westmost streets on Kungsholmen, one of the islands that make up Stockholm. I sort of like this street and its architecture even if many people don’t. I sometimes walk here during lunch, it is close to several rather nice lunch restaurants.

Today’s photograph is a shot of one of my favourite items when it comes to usefulness. It is my Galaxy S mobile phone, a ”smartphone” with Google Android operating system that enables it to plug straight into all google services online which is really useful.

Google maps for navigation, google reader for RSS, facebook, mail, workmail (exchange server using active sync) and many other things, not to mention it keeps track of my geolocation when I am shooting pictures outdoor and so on. Lovely little piece of equipment.

The expression ”there is an app for that” is just so true…
