Sarkozy and Obama Comparing

Ibland uppskattar jag verkligen fredagslänkarna som kommer farande. Ibland skrattar jag gott åt de riktigt fåniga och löjeväckande sakerna som dimper ner i epostlådan. Här är en sådan.

Sometimes I really appreciate the friday links people send around. Somtimes i laugh loudly at the really silly stuff that finds its way into my email box on a friday. Here is one of the sillier ones.

Firewire 1600 and 3200 specifications released

firewire-logoI am a person who prefer firewire, or 1394 as we engineers calls it, because of the well thought out architecture the higher and more stable throughput at the same bandwith, the handling of multiple and chained devices in a very graceful way and so on.

Therefore I was happy to discover that IEEE has approved the standards for Firewire-1600 and Firewire-3200 now. I just hope that there will be devices out for these standards soon and cards that you can insert in the PC to use them with. That would be brilliant for a stand-alone disk array or something similar if for some reason you would not want to use Ethernet.

Tele2 and Telenor joins forces in coming LTE network

Interesting enough these two operators have previously not cooperated together in their network building, instead there has been two blocks with 3 and Telenor on one side for the UMTS and Telia + Tele2 on the other side. But since Telia is building their own network and the operator 3 decided to stick with UMTS for the time being the left over operators Tele2 and Telenor have decided to form a new partnership.

I find this really interesting and I think it will be a good thing for the customers pricewise in the end since competition will start on several fronts at the same time. The differences between one operator and another will probably become more and more blurry as these cooperations proceeds.

VAXen don’t belong some places

The author of this piece is Jack Harvey, harvey(at)eisner.decus.org, and it was originally published under the title ”The Immortal Murderer” on January 18th, 1989 on DECUServe, the DECUS member bulletin board.

I have decided to preserve this piece for coming computer generations. Have fun. The date at the end of the story that is mentioned is also known as ”the black Monday” when the financial markets came crashing down. Hold that thought while you read through this piece.

VAX 11/780 Intero

VAXen, my children, just don’t belong some places. In my business, I am frequently called by small sites and startups having VAX problems. So when a friend of mine in an Extremely Large Financial Institution (ELFI) called me one day to ask for help, I was intrigued because this outfit is a really major VAX user – they have several large herds of VAXen – and plenty of sharp VAXherds to take care of them.

So I went to see what sort of an ELFI mess they had gotten into. It seems they had shoved a small 750 with two RA60’s running a single application, PC style, into a data center with two IBM 3090’s and just about all the rest of the disk drives in the world. The computer room was so big it had three street addresses. The operators had only IBM experience and, to quote my friend, they were having ”a little trouble adjusting to the VAX”, were a bit hostile towards it and probably needed some help with system management. Hmmm, Hostility… Sigh.

Well, I thought it was pretty ridiculous for an outfit with all that VAX muscle elsewhere to isolate a dinky old 750 in their Big Blue Country, and said so bluntly. But my friend patiently explained that although small, it was an ”extremely sensitive and confidential application.” It seems that the 750 had originally been properly clustered with the rest of a herd and in the care of one of their best VAXherds. But the trouble started when the Chief User went to visit his computer and its VAXherd.

Retro-Hacking: Commodore 64 Portable

Recently on one of the mailinglists I read there was a link posted to this guy who has made a portable C64 laptop. I was amazed at the level of attention to details this guy has and how well his design rhymes with the design of the times used when the C64 was originally designed.

That designed was called the ”bread box” here in Sweden with that typical beige gray sort of colour for the Commodore computers. Way before the redesigned almost Volvo-looking C128 and C128D and the futuristic sort of looking Amiga 500.

IPRED Watchlist

Efter införandet av den nya lagen om upphovsrättsliga påföljder för fildelare i sverige, den s.k. IPRED-lagen, har det redan kommit en sajt där man kan kolla om ens eget IP-nummer förekommer i en utredning. Kolla in IPRED Watchlist.

Following the new intellectual properties law in Sweden, also called the IPRED Law there is now a site where you can check if your IP number is under investigation. Check out the IPRED Watchlist.

Because IP numbers change some times for broadband connections it means that it is possible that you might now have an IP number that is under investigation even if you did not do anything. This is because the IP number was logged at a previous owner. Since they know the time it was in use you should not have to worry – or?
