Renewing the site

Dear people today is the 1st of March 2009 and I have not had much time lately to spend on my website so this weekend I have done some changes, mostly ”under the hood” but you may also notice that the appearance changed drastically today. This new theme is quite more Leonardo DaVinci looking rather than the old sleek modern-and-chrome thing I used before. It signifies some changes as well and that I have moved parts of the photography article things away from this place over to the Swedish site fotonen.se which is a place that I will be developing more in the coming months.

Those of you who have followed me around since I started Ichimusai.org a long time ago, before the new millennium knows that about once a year I usually do change something around, and I think this is a part of my process of developing – not only the webbskillz per see but my focus in life also seems to shift a bit.

I will still use this place to post my own personal photographs, manipulations and ideas and musing on anyway so don’t worry about that. I also hope to translate most of the Swedish articles to English and publish here because I know from comments and emails I have a small but much interested bunch of readers out there around the world. Much obliged! :)

In my life there has been some changes also – as most of you are aware I changed jobs and are now working for the local company providing the underground metro train services, commuter train services, bus services and some of the ferries in the city and close archipelago. The company is Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). My position there is as an engineer on the radio team. The company has several radio systems that it maintains for fleet supervision, traffic radio for the metro trains and so on and we are currently involved in many interesting projects so I was taken onboard so to speak to support that.

Jeanette and the cats here are doing well as well, and my fiancee Jeanette has now got her own blog started which you can take a look at (all in Swedish).

A walk in the winter city

Today I had the opportunity to take a walk around the city since I went early from work to my medical check (mandatory to do regularly for people working on or near the railway) and since I had to skip lunch to be fasting for the medical checkup I finished a little earlier so I spent the day in the city with the camera looking for three things and I found them all.

  • Indian chai tea
  • A nice haircut that’s not too expensive
  • A nice salad lunch served after 14.30.

I was actually able to find all three and had a wonderful day walking around the city from Kungsholmen down to Södermalm and then taking the commuter train back home from Södra Station.

HP 35s

I have always liked the HP calculators and have had a couple of different models including the very bulky HP 48 GX machine. Now when I started my new job I wanted something that would fit a shirt pocket but still be powerful enough and allow me to do more or less advanced equation solving without using Matlab or Excel or something similar.

And I found the answer to my prayers, the HP 35s which is a really cool ”old skool” calculator but with many useful functions such as equation solving and substitution. And above all it speaks RPN which is something I demand of my calculator which rules out Texas and Casio and many other brands.

RPN is the ability to quickly calculate complex series of operations without having to use parenthesis and other awkward functions. Using RPN to calculate 5 +8 * 9 means the folloing keypresses:

8 <enter> 9 <multiply> 5 <plus>

It may seem backwards and complex but it means you always get things in the right order and priority and that without using parenthesis. To calculate something more complex 10 * log (k * T * 1000):

1000 <enter> T <mul> k <mul> <log> 10 <mul>

Change alphabet in IRC

Some IRC clients such as ircII, Epic, BitchX and so on may not come with a full european setting to be able to display characters such as å, ä, ö, ü, µ, € and so on properly. This is the way to fix this.

First set your language environment to avoid unicode:

export LANG en_US

Then start your IRC application and enter the following commands:

/set eight_bit_char on
/set translation Latin_1

Now you should be able to use it properly.

Ichimusai at modellbilder.se

Backup your Windows Mobile

Dotfred’s Space has a backup software free of charge to back up everything on your Windows Mobile device. The problem here is that WM required you to back up contacts and so on using an MS Exchange server. This software allows you to create a backup file and then restore it and does not rely on any other software to do it.

Great stuff if you are using a Windows Mobile based PDA/Mobile phone such as the Ericsson X1 or the HTC series of mobiles. Works with both touch-screen and non-touch-screen mobiles.

Akalla

(English version here)

Akalla Panorama
